Nexans Superconductors emerged from the HTS activities of the former Hoechst AG (Aventis Research and Technologies). The HTS group of Aventis were acquired by Alcatel in October 1999. Then in October 2000, with the intention to focus solely on the cable part of its business, Alcatel Cable became Nexans. Our new legal entity, Nexans Superconductors is wholly owned by Nexans. The HTS group has consolidated its activities on the Chemipark Knapsack in Huerth, 10 km south-west of the centre of Cologne. At Nexans Superconductors a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of chemists, physicists and engineers work together to constantly develop and improve HTS materials, materials properties and production technologies. Innovative applications of HTS materials are investigated in our own laboratories and through partnerships and collaborations with other companies and research institutes world wide. Our team were recognized as co-inventors of the Bismuth based superconductors is 1998 and pioneered and patented the Melt Cast Process (MCP) for the manufacture of HTS bulk parts. This process enabled the first commercial applications of HTS as current leads in cryogen free magnet systems. Such HTS current leads continue to be the enabling step in the increasing application of cryocooler based technology. MCP bulk parts are now considered suitable candidates for other applications including current limiters, magnetic bearings and power transmission links. Precursor material from NEXANS Superconductors has long been considered preferable by leading HTS conductor manufacturers.
