UPGRADING KEY TRANSMISSION OR DISTRIBUTION LINES: The innovative ACPR LO-SAG® conductor is much lighter & stronger, dispatching more energy and reducing line losses without modifying existing towers. ACPR Lo-Sag™ conductors are compact HTLS conductors made of a composite core based on long carbon fibers embedded in a high technology epoxy resin matrix and several thermal aluminum layers of Al-Zr alloy, AT1 type according to IEC 62004.
Composite core is protected against enviromental agents and galvanic corrosion by using a seamless aluminum tube.
AT1 Conductive layers are made with shaped wires (Z-shaped on external layers).
The carbon core has a very low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) compared to the aluminum. When the conductor temperature increases, because of the large difference of CTE between the two materials, aluminum layers elongates quicker than the core, transferring all the mechanical responsabilty to this. From that transition temperature (thermal knee point) the complete conductor will behave according to characteristics of the core (E-Modulus and CTE).
Maximum continuous operating temperature is 150 ºC. In emergency conditions the conductor could operate at 180 ºC for 400 cumulative hours maximum.
Because of the above mentioned behaviour, thermal limits and also due to its low weight, the Lo-Sag™ conductor is ideal for reconductoring applications in order to replace all kind of existing traditional conductors, increasing significantly the capacity of lines with congestion problems, with very low thermal sags and without increasing the loads on the existing structures.
Due to the high modulus of elasticity of the composite core, low sags are not only when operating at high temperature but also with ice loads.
Due to its compact design, ACPR Lo-SagTM conductors have also all the advantages of AERO-Z designs: low drag coefficient at high wind speeds, low susceptibility to ice accretion, low losses when operating at moderate temperatures and a reasonable ROI.
